Choosing between SEO and CPC

Link Farms and Search Engine Optimization

What are link farms? Well, you could say as the name suggests that they are farms that produce links. To be clearer, it is a system where all the members of the group are linked to each other via a common link page. Thus each of the member's website will have a link to the other member's website. Sounds quite convenient for the website, but there is more to it than meets the eye.

As a bad SEO practice one may join any such link program and make one's website seem to look popular instantly/ overnight. As most of such link programs have up to hundreds or thousands or more of members instant access to large number of sites becomes possible. But please beware, because the website crawlers from Google and other search engines can easily identify such an artificially given boost of link popularity. It is aware that this kind of linking has nothing to do with real popularity of the website and that it amounts to actually cheating/misleading the online visitor.

It is unfortunate that many a websites have got penalized by Google (like a fall in the website's page rank) just because they took part in such link programs though innocently without being aware of its long term implications. SEO and Doorway Pages

What is a doorway page? Well by definition a doorway page is content created specifically for the purpose of getting high placements in the search engines. Thus it is not a good form of SEO and is done by those who think they can get an easy solution. These doorway pages are HTML pages with keywords and phrases that can be seen only by the spiders and search engines. It is actually a method of tricking the spiders for getting a higher ranking.

What happens when human visitors come to these doorway pages? They get instantly redirected to the actual website. Thus doorway pages are considered "spammy" that may be Ok for a short time but will in the long run bring down the site's credibility. This is what Google has to say about doorway pages: Avoid "doorway" pages created just for search engines or other "cookie cutter" approaches such as affiliate programs with little or no original content. Actually Google spiders are become more efficient by the day and can even ban or ignore the doorway pages. So what are the common characteristics seen in a doorway page? They include,
  • Content not well written, with many hyperlinked phrases in the text
  • Stuffed with lists of keywords

In the long run it will be found that the amount of time spent in doing good SEO work is any day better that the time spent using black hat techniques and will be appreciated by both the search engines and humans. In conclusion one could say that if one wants to generate traffic there is a better method than making doorway pages and that is making of good informational and useful essay pages. Yes, making of essay pages is a more ethical and better answer to doorway pages. However one must be prepared to make a good essay pages will mean more work, unlike the door way pages that are made by just the scripts. Feed Aggregator based SEO Syndication

Having good content is an essential part of any effective website and content syndication using feed aggregators has proven to be the best available SEO strategy. So what is a feed aggregator? Well in Internet technology it is the software or a hosted application that collects feeds from various sources and displays it in a single view, either in a desktop window or in a web browser.

Search Engine Optimization and Sitemap Submission

A sitemap is a list of all the pages on a website and a good navigation aid. Creation and submission of a sitemap helps make sure that the search engine gets to know about all the pages on the website, including URLs that may not be discoverable by the normal crawling process. Proper Sitemap submission is an important SEO (Search Engine Optimization) activity.

There are basically two types of Sitemaps.

  • Sitemaps for users/readers
  • Sitemap for search engines

The first type of Sitemap is a HTML page and lists the pages of the website. It helps the users to find the information they require.

What are XML sitemaps? An XML sitemap is actually the Sitemap made for the search engine. A Sitemap is very important due to the following reasons.
  • The website has dynamic content.
  • When the website has got web pages that cannot be easily discovered during the crawlers
  • Use of Ajax / JavaScript on the website
  • A new siteLess linked website
  • Big volume archive on site without interlinking
Actually Sitemaps provide additional information about the web site to Google, complementing the regular methods of crawling of the web. The Sitemap will help in crawling more of the site and also in a more timely fashion. However Google cannot guarantee that the URLs from the Sitemap will be added to the Google index.

Sitemap 0.90 is offered under the terms of the Attribution-ShareAlike Creative Commons License and has a wide adoption policy that includes support from Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.

How is the information given to the crawlers by the search engines? Once we have created the Sitemap file and placed on the server, the search engine can be informed in one of the following ways.

  • Submission via the search engine's submission interface
  • Specifying the location in the site's robots.txt file
  • Sending an HTTP request

After Sitemap submission process the search engines makes the Sitemap available to their search crawlers.

SEO / SEM and the Landing Page

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is today an essential process that cannot be overlooked by any online business website. Having a well designed website which is not optimized for the search engines is not desirable. The webpage / site must be able to attract the required traffic that fulfils the business objectives. If you have an online marketing campaign going on, it is very essential that required potential traffic keeps flowing into the website.

Actually in SEO every page of a site that gets indexed by search engines becomes a potential landing page. Here there may not be a single landing page that demands immediate /instant conversion. The content of the web page and/or links to the page are optimized for very specific, carefully researched keywords.

However in SEM (Search Engine Marketing) and PPC (pay per click) Campaigns, a landing page, also known by the term lead capture page, is the page that appears when a potential customer clicks on an advertisement or a search-engine result link. The page will usually display content that is a logical extension of the advertisement or link, which is optimized to feature specific keywords or phrases for indexing by search engines. This landing page is also used for counting and tracking all the arrivals and determines the level of effectiveness of a marketing campaign.

Landing pages may be either,
  • Referential
  • Transactional
While the referential landing page contains the relevant information as required by the visitor, a transactional landing page seeks to persuade a visitor to complete some transaction. This could be filling up some form/ registration/ or addition to a mailing list etc. Only once the transaction is over, can the vistor be said to be a conversion. But this is a challenging process. How do we motivate a visitor to register? He needs to be comforted, motivated and directed to take action and get converted. A more efficient landing page will mean a better conversion rate.

Needless to say, a lot of effort has to go in designing the right landing page that can enhance a website's conversion rate. One might have to try out different designs and see which one works best.
