What is Chiropractic?
Chiropractic is a complementary and alternative health care
discipline that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal and nervous
system. This system of medicine is concerned with the treatment of muscles,
joints, bones, and connective tissue such as cartilage, ligaments, and
tendons.
Chiropractic practitioners regard man as an integrated being,
paying special attention to spinal mechanics, neurological, vascular,
musculoskeletal, nutritional, and environmental relationships. The word
“chiropractic” originates from the Greek words “cheir” and “praxis,” which
means “done by hand.” Eventhough the system was mentioned in ancient
literature, the modern profession of the chiropractic was founded by Daniel
David Palmer in 1895. The system is based on two primary concepts – one, the
body has a powerful self-healing ability and two, the spine plays an important
role in maintaining general health. Chiropractic consider spinal joint
misalignments called subluxations as the key factor for bodily dysfunction.
The disease may be caused as a result of interference of subluxations through
nervous system. The goal of the chiropractic is to assist normal healing by
normalizing the function of spine.
Chiropractic professionals generally do not use drugs or
perform surgery. The treatment mainly includes manual adjustment,
manipulations, mobilization, massage and non-manual treatments. The manual
adjustments by hands involve applying a controlled, sudden force to the spinal
cord, joints or tissues. The non manual treatment includes application of heat
and ice, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, rehabilitative exercise, magnetic
therapy, dietary supplements etc. The doctors also combine diet and lifestyle
modification for effectiveness of the treatment.
Chiropractic treatment
has extensive insurance coverage. Chiropractic practice is regulated by laws
prevailing in each state. Many of the chiropractic professionals practice
physiotherapy, nutrition and exercises along with chiropractic principles, to
enhance the overall result. Generally, chiropractic professionals recognize
the importance of diagnostic procedures and value the cooperation of other
specialties, at times of expertise requirement.
