Physical therapy is an allied health science that deals with
maintenance and rehabilitation of those with physical incapacities due to
congenital defects, surgery, and accidents through physical modalities.
Physiotherapy is effective in the treatment of a wide range of diseases such
as arthritis, back and neck pain, cerebral palsy, incontinence, asthma,
repetitive strain injury, stroke, neurological problems, stress and anxiety,
musculoskeletal problems, cardiovascular and pulmonary problems, and cystic
fibrosis.
Physical therapy is focused on the optimum functioning of the
body. It seeks to improve movement dysfunction and functional independence of
the patient. Physical therapy is practiced by licensed practitioners called
physical therapists. They are qualified professionals who have good knowledge
in specified subjects such as biomechanics, neuroanatomy, human growth and
development, manifestations of disease, examination techniques, and
therapeutic procedures.
Physical therapy is broadly divided into four categories such
as musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, integumentary, and neurological. There
are also many sub specializations included in physical therapy such as
pediatrics, geriatrics, orthopedics, and sports medicine. Physical therapists
assess the problems of the patient through subjective interview and physical
examination. Now, many of the physical therapists use modern diagnostic
measures such as X-rays, MRI scans, electromyography, and nerve conduction
testing to confirm the actual disorder.
Physical therapy
involves three modes of treatment such as physiotherapy in conjugation with
medical therapy, in conjugation with surgery, and isolated physiotherapy.
Physical therapy is a comprehensive treatment including routine exercise,
manipulation and mobilization movements, use of external therapies including
manual therapies, soft tissue massages, and electro-physical agents. The
treatments impart strength, motor control, stretching and endurance for the
patient.
