Held on 3rd December every year, the International Day of People with Disabilities (IDPwD) is being observed since 1992 by the United Nations. This day aims at raising awareness and developing an understanding to accept people with disabilities in all aspects of life. According to the United Nations (UN), of the 7 billion world population, more than one billion people or approximately 15 per cent of the world’s population live with some form of disability, and 80 per cent live in developing countries.

The term disability refers to impairment in individual functioning, including physical impairment, sensory impairment, cognitive impairment, intellectual impairment, mental illness, and various types of chronic diseases. Physicians providing treatment for any such disabilities can rely on outsourced medical billing companies to meet their medical billing and coding requirements for claims submission. At reliable companies, medical coders will be trained in using the current medical codes to report treatments provided for disabilities.

International Day of People with Disabilities

Each year the UN announces a theme to observe this international day. This year’s theme is ‘Promoting the participation of persons with disabilities and their leadership: taking action on the 2030 Development Agenda.’ By securing the rights of people with disabilities, the United Nations is moving closer to achieving the central promise of the 2030 Agenda – to leave no one behind.
