Meta tags are HTML (Hyper Text Make-up Language) codes that are embedded into web pages and used by search engines to store information about a website. Meta tag optimization, a part of search engine optimization (SEO), is one among the key elements of any search engine optimization strategy that search engines look for ranking a website. In other words, it is the process of fine turning the Meta tags and source code to ensure the proper identification by the search engines. Meta tag optimization includes placing of Meta tags, comment tags, alt tags, and other information within the source code of a webpage.
Meta tags contain keywords phrases, keywords, copyright information, descriptions, site titles, and author information. Title tag, description Meta tag, and keyword Meta tags are the primary Meta tags that are used in almost all web pages.
Title tag – Important part of Meta tag that is used to describing the web content and scoring a website for relevancy. It contains targeted keywords or keyword phrases. Title tags appear each time when a search is occurred.
Description tag – This tag comes in accompany with the title tag. Description tag is descriptive and contains the targeted keywords in an attractive manner. A maximum of 200 characters is allowed for description tag.
Keyword tag – It is used to list the exact keywords or keyword phrases that refer an individual web page. It can have between 500 and 1000 per page.
There are two types of Meta tag optimization – on-site Meta tag optimization and off-site Meta optimization.
