According to recent research, the number of veterans using chiropractic services is increasing. Chiropractic care is an effective strategy to address musculoskeletal conditions and its popularity has increased in recent times with the national efforts to reduce opioid dependence. It can be expected that the demand for chiropractic billing services will follow these current trends.

The study, which was published in the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (JMPT), revealed that there has been a steep increase in the use of chiropractic services in the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system. The authors attribute this increase to several factors:

  • a natural growth of the chiropractic service, which was only implemented on-site at the VA in 2004
  • the successful performance of VA chiropractors
  • the perceived value of their care
  • cohort of veterans from recent conflicts in war-torn regions, which have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal conditions

Chiropractic has a patient-centered and drug-free approach and most people with musculoskeletal ailments respond well to it.

Chiropractic Care – More than Eight-fold Increase in Patients during 2004-2015

On analyzing VA national data collected between 2004 and 2015, the researchers found that the number of patients receiving chiropractic services had risen by more than 800 percent. Key findings from the study include:

  • the number of patients seen in VA chiropractic clinics increased by 821 percent during 2004-2015
  • the annual number of chiropractic visits increased by 694 percent
  • the number of chiropractic clinics grew by 9 percent annually (from 27 to 65)
  • the number of chiropractor employees rose 21 percent annually (from 13 to 86)
  • Female and younger patients received chiropractic care at VA clinics at a greater rate than the national VA outpatient population.

ACA President David Herd has commended the VA for improving access to chiropractic services to the nation’s veterans.

Role of Medical Billing and Coding Companies

With the increased demand for chiropractic treatment, chiropractors need to ensure that they have proper billing and coding practice in place. The best option is for them to rely on a professional medical billing and coding company.

Established service providers offer comprehensive solutions that cover the entire revenue management cycle – from enrollment into the billing system and insurance verification to coding, billing, and AR follow-up and payment collection from patients as well as insurance. In fact, while coding correctly for chiropractic has always been a challenge, there are new hurdles to surmount such as the increase in audit activity and the transition to ICD-10. The right company can ensure appropriate, error-free, timely, and affordable chiropractic medical billing and coding services.
