Coding Hemochromatosis Liver Disorder

by | Posted: May 22, 2023 | Medical Billing

Hemochromatosis is an inherited liver disorder, where excessive iron accumulates in the body, particularly in the liver. This condition occurs when the body absorbs too much iron and struggles to eliminate the excess, resulting in high iron levels in the blood. If left untreated, the excessive iron build-up can lead to severe conditions such as liver disease, heart problems, and diabetes. The condition is primarily caused by gene mutations that regulate iron absorption from food, and these mutations can be inherited from parents. Although most individuals with hemochromatosis do not experience noticeable symptoms, those who do may typically manifest them in midlife. These symptoms can vary but often include fatigue, joint pain, abdominal pain, low energy, and a reduced sex drive.

Diagnosing and treating hemochromatosis requires physicians to accurately identify the condition and its underlying causes. Several tests such as blood tests, liver biopsy (removing a sample of liver tissue for testing), MRI (to measure the degree of iron overload in your liver) and DNA test (testing for HFE gene) may be performed to confirm the diagnosis. To ensure correct coding of the diagnosis and treatment modalities, medical professionals can rely on professional medical billing companies.

ICD-10 and CPT Codes for Hemochromatosis

Coding Hemochromatosis Liver Disorder

Physicians can treat hereditary hemochromatosis effectively by removing blood from the body (phlebotomy) on a regular basis. Managing the medical billing and coding for general surgery, including conditions like hereditary hemochromatosis, can be challenging. Accurate clinical documentation of causes, symptoms, and treatment procedures is essential to ensure coding and billing accuracy. Medical billing and coding companies with expertise in this field can assist physicians in assigning appropriate medical codes and ensuring optimal reimbursement for the services they provide.
