Rheumatic diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) can cause unique challenges for women during pregnancy. In such cases, highly specialized care needs to be provided with the services of rheumatologists, nephrologists, anesthesiologists, and specialized nurses. Rheumatology medical coding involves reporting the conditions, their diagnoses and treatment procedures on the medical claims using appropriate ICD and CPT codes.

Some of the most common rheumatic conditions that may trigger during pregnancy are systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE or lupus), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriatic arthritis, vasculitis, antiphospholipid syndrome and others.
