In January 2021, physicians and medical billing outsourcing companies began using a new evaluation and management (E/M) coding system implemented by the CMS for outpatient visits. The 2021 E/M guidelines aim at reducing the administrative burden for practitioners and allows them to focus more on the patient and less on paperwork. Code selection depends on medical decision making (MDM) or total time spent on the day of the visit.
